Measuring Up!

Our newest Math unit has us focusing on measurement.  We have been measuring all kinds of things, using all kinds of measuring tools.  We are focusing on non-standard measure....no rulers!  We have been using straws, snap cubes, crayons, eraser, pencils and paper clips.

The students have been learning and using some important mathematical language including: measure, height, length, width, long, short, longer, shorter, larger, smaller, farthest, shortest, estimate and baseline.  Along with measuring, we have also been honing our estimation skills.  Before measuring, the students have been estimating the size of each object.  Ask your child to tell you some of the measuring they've been doing.  Ask them what a baseline is!

Take a peek at some of our different measurement activities - you could try these at home!

Measuring each other with straws...it was hard to keep track at first -

The students decided to try measuring again, but thought lying on the ground would be easier...they were right!!  They demonstrated great problem solving skills!

We also worked together to create a ramp and measured the distances the cars travelled...great team work!

Today, after recording our estimates, the class worked together to see how many newspapers it would take to cover our carpet...
