Energy Web

In Science we are exploring energy.  We have been learning more about the sun, and how important it is to all living things on earth.  The students created an energy web.  Using a long piece of yarn, the students traced energy from the sun, through the food chain.

Take a look at our "egg", "chicken", "grain" and "sun".  We are going to work on creating some more energy webs next week.

Cool as Cucumbers...

Miss Alyssa and Miss Mary Anne from the Growing Gardeners program were back today to help us continue learning about nutrition, container gardening and recycling.  The students had a great time talking, singing and even dancing about recycling.  Today, the students each planted cucumber seeds.

How are your carrot and corn plants doing at home?  The students were able to explain to Miss Alyssa and Miss Mary Anne all the things plants need to grow and thrive.  They even enjoyed a nice snack of fresh cucumbers.

Oldies but Goodies - Testing Our Birdfeeders

While Miss White was with us, she taught the students about Structures.  To help them consolidate all their learning, she gave the students an opportunity to build their own structure - a bird feeder.  After lots of hard work planning, designing and creating their bird feeders, we took them outside to test how well they would work to keep the bird feed dry.  Even though it was a cold, blustery afternoon, we bundled up, and had a great time testing out our structures.

Ontario Curriculum expectations this activity fulfilled include:

Science and Technology - Understanding Structures and Mechanisms

2.3  Investigate, through experimentation, the properties of various materials (e.g. the best materials for absorbing or repelling water)

2.4  Use technological problem-solving and knowledge acquired from previous investigations, to design, build and test a structure for a specific purpose (e.g. a tent,  a bird feeder)

Hat Day and Thank You...

Friday was Miss White's last day in our classroom.  Although we will miss her, the students had a great time trying many fun activities with her while she was teaching.  On her last day with us, we had Crazy Hat Day.  All week, students had been reading a story about favourite hats.  Not only did we read about hats, but we made our own in Visual Arts.  Some students chose to bring in a fun hat, while most of us wore the ones we made.

A big thank you to Miss White for all the fun and interesting activities she prepared and taught to the students.  We were glad to hear that she would come back and visit.

Enjoy some of the sights of Crazy Hat Day and our farewell celebration.

Thank you Miss White!  We wish you all the best in your future endeavors!

Growing Gardeners

We are taking part in a community partnership with Ready-Set-Go.  Once a week, for four weeks, volunteers from Ready-Set-Go will be coming in to teach us more about the importance of healthy eating, and to teach us about container gardening.

Wednesday was our first visit, and we had a blast!  Miss Alyssa and Miss Mary Anne led us in a fun lesson of games, songs and activities.  Then, each student planted their very own carrot seeds. These came home on Friday, and we are going to try our best to watch them grow and take care of them. Miss Alyssa and Miss Mary Anne will return on Wednesday for our next gardening session. We can't wait to see what we will be planting next!
